Small Vegetables Garden – Have you ever thought about making your house look outstanding in an affordable way? Creating vegetable garden at home may be one of the best solutions. You can imagine the moment when you are sitting on the terrace, looking at the green of the leaves and the vivid colors of the ripe tomatoes and hot peppers indulging your eyes. Perhaps, you can put some gnomes to kick your garden up a notch. But, wait! You suddenly remember that you don’t even have a backyard. Don’t be upset! You can try the following small vegetable garden ideas.
- Go Vertical
Do you fancy eating salad? You should grow some cucumbers and lettuces at home. Then, you are wondering how to grow them in a limited space. Let your crops “climb” and grow vertically.
Growing plants vertically has been widely used by gardeners to cultivate vine vegetables like cucumbers. Going vertical means you simply grow the crops upward rather than outward by making them climb a trellis or fence, planting them in a stake of pots, on garden netting, or in a basket hung near the window. Vertical gardening is very suitable for those who don’t have enough space to do traditional gardening such as apartment dwellers.
The idea of cultivating edible plants has turned into fashion among the urban people. We may encounter some people in the neighborhood grow vine-vegetables to accentuate their fence. Perhaps, we come across some houses feature some hanging plants which make the house look artistic.
Then, we are amazed by the green walls (walls covered by climbing plants) in his house when we look in on an old friend. It has proven that gardening is not only about planting crops, but also creating a masterpiece.
- Square Foot Gardening
Do you wish to grow carrots and some other nutritious veggies, but you’ve just realized that you don’t even have a backyard? You can try to use square foot gardening method.
Square foot gardening is a gardening method where you sow the plants seeds in a raised bed sizing 4 × 4 ft. Then, you divide the raised bed into 4 squares. You saw different vegetable seeds in each square. You will get various kinds of vegetables in a raised bed. Actually, you can adjust the size of the bed as you wish. The size of the beds depends on the need of you and your family.
This method is a little bit pricey in that you have to purchase the raised beds. But you can also make your own raised beds. The raised beds can be made of concrete blocks, planks, and rebar, or even sandbags will do in a pinch.
- Container Gardening
This is my favorite. If I may say, container gardening is the cream of the crop. It allows us to expand our creativity as well as develop our gardening skill.
Container gardening is very effective for those who have limited space to grow foods. Many people use pots as the containers of the crops. You can purchase them in the nearest nursery. You will find many kinds of pots ranging from the small to the huge size. Despite the sizes and the shapes, you can still grow your favorite vegetables such as hot peppers, spinach, lettuces, you name it!
Growing plants in some pots may be costly since you need to buy more than one pot. You don’t need to pay through the nose to create a spectacular garden. Let’s try some cheaper—or even free—containers. Think free, think used things.
You only have to find some miscellaneous items in your house. They can be buckets, food containers, tires, and even boots. But you need to make sure that they will not be used anymore. I can recall what my grandfather did to his vegetable garden. He planted tomatoes and hot peppers in some used buckets which put on his balcony. To my surprise, they turned out well.
Tires and boots sound unusual. But they are good containers for growing vegetables. Fill the holes in the middle of tires with well-drained soil. Don’t forget to apply some compost to promote vigorous growth. Then, you are ready to sow the seeds into this unique container. You can also do the same thing to boots.
- Windowsill Gardening
This is the best solution for those who have an eminently limited space especially apartment dwellers. You can still grow your favorite leafy greens on your windowsill. You only need to prepare some small pots which have been filled with soil. Sow the seeds in the pot. Then, put the pots on your windowsill. Let the full sunlight help them grow well. You will find them more than useful. They can accentuate your plain and tedious window. Furthermore, they are edible.
Those are some creative ideas that you can use to make small vegetable garden. Don’t be overwhelmed by those ideas. You have to choose gardening techniques which suit your needs well. Let’s try them all!
